1) Brittany is a wild athlete and was a great guest to listen to. She is a trail runner for North Face and for all her accomplishments (not just as a runner), takes a much looser approach to her training than many pro athletes. When I say loose I just mean that she seems to have way more fun with her training than others of her caliber, hence her nickname “the Funny Runner.” If you want more proof just give her a follow on Strava and you’ll see a wonderful mix of athletic class and comedy. Chris guides this conversation as they get into the depths of what makes her training unique and some of the methods she implements to keep things light.

One of those things is the freedom to build her own training schedule throughout the week. Her coach gives her the pieces she needs to accomplish and she slots them in as she sees fit, thus giving her complete ownership of the program.

Since the podcast aired Brittany competed in the Leadville trail marathon where she placed first with a time of 4 hours and 14 minutes over 42km and 1800m of elevation gain.

Check out her 2021 award winning short film here.

2) Some of you may remember seeing this story in 2018 when a soccer team of 12 Thai children and their coach became trapped in the Tham Luang cave system after it unexpectedly flooded. They were in there for 9 days before being found. This event could have been extremely tragic but ended with a successful rescue largely in part to the guest on this pod, Dr. Richard Harris. He is an Australian Anesthesiologist and a world renowned cave diver. This unique pairing of skills made him an invaluable team member in the heroic rescue as he was personally requested by the Thai government to come and help.

The host brings out details of Dr. Harris’ personal and professional background that led to him being the man for the job. They then dive into the decision-making process that went into getting the kids out which Dr. Harris firmly felt would kill the kids even as they proceeded with the plan. He speaks to his decision being the lesser of two evils and how doing nothing was sure to end in a gruesome way for the kids.

Whether it was a miracle or immense talent and composure under pressure, all 13 people were safely removed from the cave; a 3hr dive through poor visibility and technical passages.

I won’t spill the beans on what the plan was but based on his profession I’m sure you can figure it out.

As cliche as it may be, my favourite quote from Dr. Harris on this pod is:

We are capable of so much more than we think they are.

3) This pod was a sweet behind the scenes discussion with Matt Nichols who has been doing S&C for 23 years within the NHL and NFL. One can only imagine the things he’s seen and Matt shares some of these stories on the pod. One thing I found interesting was that in Matt’s opinion many athletes at the pro level are successful despite the things they do, not because of the things they do. He touches on his transition between football and hockey and the differences in physical qualities between athletes in the two sports.

He’s got stories from his time in the NHL about Ed Belfour, Pat Quinn, Hal Gill, Tie Domi, and Nathan Perrott and others involving his younger years under the tutelage of Charlie Francis the coach for Ben Johnson.

The Rx’d Radio guys keep the convo light and humorous making this a good pod to throw on if you’re interested in the hockey S&C scene.

4) On this pod Joe has two guests to discuss the highly debated use of the drug ivermectin as a treatment for COVID. Dr. Kory is an ICU physician and lung specialist while Bret is an evolutionary biologist and previous guest of the show. I’m far too uneducated on the topic to really add anything but if you’re one of the many people who have probably seen this drug pop off in controversy on social media then this may be a worthwhile listen to shed some more light on the topic. I can’t confirm if everything they said is true but they provide compelling arguments as to why this drug is not being more widely utilized and no it’s not Joe coming up with these arguments.

Since this podcast aired Bret has had his youtube channel demonetized for his continued advocacy for the use of ivermectin meaning he can no longer earn money for the views that he gets.

5) Krystal and Saagar are American political commentators and hosts of the youtube channel Breaking Points. I have listened to them before and find their discussions informative and extremely refreshing as they sit on opposite sides of the political spectrum yet are able to approach divisive topics in a cohesive way. Similar to the other JRE pod I discussed above I don’t have much to add as they discuss numerous topics but if you’re interested in American current events but want a different perspective their youtube channel might be worth checking out!

Hope you enjoyed and thanks for reading!
